Retrieving canopy height and density of paddy rice from Radarsat-2 images with a canopy scattering model

چکیده
Quantification of rice biophysical properties is important not only for rice growth monitoring and cropping management, but for understanding carbon cycle in agricultural ecosystems. In this study, a rice canopy scattering model (RCSM) was firstly utilized to simulate rice backscatter with a root mean square error (RMSE) <1 dB in comparison with the C-band, HH-polarization Radarsat-2 images. And then, by integrating the model with a generic algorithm optimization tools (GOAT), canopy height and density were separately retrieved from Radarsat-2 images acquired in three rice growth stages (elongation stage, heading stage and yellow ripening stage). Accuracy analysis showed that the two parameters could be retrieved with the RMSE of 5.4 cm in height, and 26 (#/m2) in density. The study demonstrated the potential of Radarsat-2 SAR data for quantitative mapping of biophysical parameters of paddy rice. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Estimation of Paddy Rice Variables with a Modified Water Cloud Model and Improved Polarimetric Decomposition Using Multi-Temporal RADARSAT-2 Images
Rice growth monitoring is very important as rice is one of the staple crops of the world. Rice variables as quantitative indicators of rice growth are critical for farming management and yield estimation, and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has great advantages for monitoring rice variables due to its all-weather observation capability. In this study, eight temporal RADARSAT-2 full-polarimetric ...
متن کاملIntroducing the improved Forest Canopy density (FCD) model for frequent assessment of Hyrcanian forest
Mapping of forest extent is a prerequisite to acquire quantitative and qualitative information about forests and to formulate management and conservation strategies. forest canopy density (FCD) model is one of the useful RS methods for forest mapping using satellite images. One of the most serious challenges in FCD model is the weakness in the calculation of canopy density in low density forest...
متن کاملRice biomass retrieval from advanced synthetic aperture radar image based on radar backscattering measurement
A biomass inversion algorithm based on a semi-empirical scattering model has been developed by using the simultaneous observation data, which are obtained by ground-based and space-based scatterometers during the rice-growing season. Three steps are applied to build the algorithm: (1) the backscattering coefficients are collected in eight acquisitions at different growth periods. Meanwhile, the...

Risks assessment of forest project implementation in spatial density changes of forest under canopy vegetation using artificial neural network modeling approach Nowadays, environmental risk assessment has been defined as one of the effective in environmental planning and policy making. Considering the position and structure of vegetation on the forest floor, the main role of forest under ca...
متن کاملRadarsat-2 Backscattering for the Modeling of Biophysical Parameters of Regenerating Mangrove Forests
The aim of this study is to understand the relationship between radar backscattering (σ ̋, β ̋ and γ) of a multi-polarized Radarsat-2 C-band image with the structural attributes of regenerating mangrove vegetation located at the mouth of the Amazon River. CBH (circumference at breast height), height and species data were collected to characterize vegetation structure and above-ground biomass (AGB...
